Why Is OpenFlow Focused on L2-4?

Ivan Pepelnjak is still not sure what the killer app is for Software Defined Networking and OpenFlow. I must admit that I am in search for that answer myself. Although I can see some great datacenter advantages, there are still domain and protocol boundaries.

Does this sound like Multi-Layer Switching, the technology every Catalyst 5000 user loved to death? Sure it does. Does it make sense? Well, it failed miserably the first time, but maybe we’ll get luckier with the next attempt.

I have always compared Openflow/SDN to Cisco’s Express Forwarding and Multi Layer Switching on Catalyst Switches, whereby I compare the Supervisormodule with the Openflow Controller and the Linecards with Openflow Switches.
