Stephen Foskett just found out about in-cell regular expressions in Google Spreadsheets:
I’m a UNIX command line guy, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I love regular expressions. This simple language allows one to slice and dice text strings with abandon, greatly simplifying data extraction and replacement tasks. Although it’s been there since 2010, I was thrilled recently to discover that Google Spreadsheets now supports in-cell regular expressions!
Really great and helpful, I wouldn’t expect less from an engineering company like Google. That’s exactly the reason I don’t understand why they have not implemented regex in Gmail. Gmail even supports the nerdy vi-keys, so why do they not support regex in search? Now that I mention search, let’s pull this thing even further. Regex in search would be awesome!
